A Hidden Gem in the Bronx: Walton Morris & Creston League

Summertime is in full-effect, and the streetball tournaments in New York City are putting out crowds faster than the tourists can visit Midtown! In the Bronx, a tournament sits at 181st & Walton Ave that goes unnoticed to most amongst the major tournaments throughout the Bronx, Harlem, Brooklyn, and Queens. To most it means nothing but to everyone who has witnessed it on tape or in-person, they can tell you their thoughts on the league.

The Walton Morris & Creston League showcases true streetball at its finest – bringing back the roots and true essence of the game. Teams rock t-shirts not jerseys, fans have to find their own seats, and the community plays a major role with few majors coming into the park. Want the flash, the finesse, and the 2010 resources? There are plenty of those games elsewhere. In the northern section of the Bronx, these games have one announcer, one DJ, and plenty of love for the game.

Weekend games highlight high school competition with some of the best from the borough that claims the birthplace of hip-hop. In a city that brags pro level players on the street circuit, this diamond in the rough has found a home for young talent to hone their skills and keep their game polished. Don’t let the referees fool you – in the playground, elbows will be thrown and scrappy play will keep the kids tough. Welcome to the Boogie Down Bronx!
